The Spring Food and Booze Round-up!

by The Editor

Woman-Cocktail-BW

Spring has certainly sprung in Canberra, and as we stow away our gloves and scarves in exchange for dresses and shorts, it’s time to celebrate the best season of the year.

Warmer weather means its time to get out and about to explore some of Canberra’s new food and drink offerings. Here’s a quick round-up of what’s caught our eye in the bright

White Rabbit Cocktail Room
(now open)
Jolimont Centre, Northbourne Avenue
Canberra City

This is bar designed for a ‘what’ and not a ‘who’. That ‘what’ is Instagram. With an Alice in Wonderland theme, everything from the cakes to the cocktails to the fitout is pretty and perfect for phone photography. Nick Tuckwell has done a great job of refurbing the tired-but-well-oved Kremlin Bar into a new space that takes the city’s bars in a brand new direction.

What they’re saying:

Curiouser and curiouser…

What we’re thinking:

A welcome break from the previously blokey trend in Canberra bar design. Thank God there’s finally a new place to party in a frock and heels since Hippo went all ‘Baxter’s Inn’. It’s been a long two years…

XO-logo-BWXO
(open 22 October)
16 Iluka Street
Narrabundah

The owners of this new Asian experience speak of it as a vision. Given the months of planning and extensive refurbishment that has gone into the Narrabundah venue, we’re pretty pumped to see how the dream has become a reality.

XO-Interior-BWWhat they’re saying:

XO delivers an innovative, modern approach to traditional South East Asian cuisine that is grounded by a commitment to unpretentious, honest food.

What we’re thinking

This site in grungy Narrabundah has a proud history (Das Kapital, The Artisan). It would be great to see another venue re-invent the dynamic flavours of the region to our north. The big question is this: Can the outer-Inner South dish up another restaurant that is worth travelling to?

Highball-Express-Logo-BWHighball Express
(open late October – maybe?)
Melbourne Building, Alinga Street
Canberra City

First there was Molly. Now, Highball Express looks to introduce a brand new experience of a Cuban hacienda with big balconies and a light and breezy feel.

Highball-Interior-BWWhat they’re saying:

Cocktail bar in the heart of Canberra’s CBD with over 500 rums and a dedicated function space.

What we’re thinking:

The small and dark (Molly) is going big and bright (Highball) on the ‘difficult’ side of Northbourne Avenue. Last time, the boys put together a beautiful whiskey vault. This time we dream of a cigar section to match all of those rums.

Other rumours? How about a sports bar in Kingston? Mombassa seems to be getting a long-overdue makeover, and we hear that one of Canberra’s most experienced bar owners is heading to Lonsdale Street.

Stay tuned!

In a Word: Diversity

Spring

This time of year is fantastic! So much promise, like in the springtime of my youth. Golden wattle everywhere. Fuchsia and ivory pashmak blooms on cheery cherry trees. Lengthening days. Thawing…but it’s not always this cheery. Read the rest of this entry »

Dress Circle – Liz

by The Editor

Ah, Spring in Canberra. It’s that time when we cast off the scarves and overcoats of winter, don our best sundresses, and race outside only to find that, well, this is Canberra, and half the time there’s still a mighty chill in the air. But never fear! There is a stylish solution to keep you warm on those cool spring evenings, as we discovered when we ran into Liz.

Let it Snow! Winter Bites Back.

by The Editor

Wow, only days ago we were revelling in the warm Spring sunshine, filled with optimism and wondering where we were going to stash our jackets for the next six months. Then, in tried and true Canberra style, Winter hit back with a Thursday that barely crawled over 8 degrees. Brrrr…

However, images coming in from around the region truly show how cold it got overnight.

The Thursday Tipple – 2008 Brindabella Hills Shiraz

Hello all, it’s that time again… where we dedicate ourselvesd to trying, testing, deciphering and lusting after more of the produce from our local vineyards.  On this occassion we are in the Hall region of Canberra at Brindabella Hills; and it’s Shiraz we are after.

Launch: Floriade 25th Anniversary

by The Editor

Floriade – it’s a funny old thing.  The mere suggestion the annual celebration of all things bloomy can set some people’s eyes rolling.  For others September marks an annual pilgrimage to the Nation’s capital in a collection of green thumbs and gumboots.  With an estimated $30 million rolling through the city over the next month, there are plenty of retailers, restauranteurs and hoteliers who are pretty happy to have it around.  The Canberran popped along to Friday’s launch to see what this year’s fuss was all about.

Knightsbridge Penthouse Cocktail Launch: Spring!

by The Editor

A true stayer n the Canberra cocktail circuit, Knightsbridge Penthouse refuses to rest on its laurels.  Come tonight (Friday) this bastion of beautiful beverages gives itself an airing with the launch of a Spring cocktail menu.

We could go on in detail about what the gang has on offer but, given we are essentially lazy in our journalistic pursuits, follow the jump for all the goss lifted directly from their Facebook page…

Fashion Circle: Amanda

by The Editor

Finally Spring has sprung in Canberra. Sure, we’re expecting a bit of rain over the weekend, but Thursday was a stunner.

And so it was on that same day we found Amanda. She came to us as as shock of red among a sea of grey-clad locals who seemed unaware Canberra had shed its Winter coat.

Upon questioning, Amanda revealed her dress was from Alice Be Curious, the wonderfully fab boutique located under the Metropolitan Apartments on the edge of New Acton. As it turns out, Amanda is also a make-up artist and stylist, so The Canberran looks forward to working with her in the future.

Thanks Amanda, for brightening what may be the first real day of spring. Lady, keep on frocking!

Rant: The Fashion Circle

by The Editor

The Canberran was rather disgusted by a failed attempt a lunch to photograph some well-dressed lads and lasses on a perfectly fine Spring day.  An hour was spent circling the Inner City, but it seemed no one in Canberra could be bothered putting in any effort whatsoever.  As a result, this edition of Fashion Circle becomes a rant.  Let’s hope tomorrow bears at least some fruit – surely there is more than just Anneta, Alyce and Patrick to show us how it’s done.

So, in protest, I am featuring this red emergency phone.  Even though inanimate state, it appears to have put in more effort than half the population.

Fail, Canberra.  Fail.

Fashion Circle – Anneta

by The Editor

Well, finally The Canberran has managed to post the first fashion spot for the blog. Hooray!

With Floriade now in full effect we were charmed by Anneta’s bold floral print matched with bright colours. It’s a great outfit reminding us all to forget about winter activities and get out into the sunshine. Spring is finally here.

Beautiful!
