Canberra Vintage 2013 – A Winemaker’s Perspective

by The Vinsiders

Four Winds Menu

For a change in pace, the Vinsiders have chased down one of our local growers to discuss the current vintage and ask what it’s like to grow grapes in the Canberra region.

Let’s just say the prospects are good.

The Thursday Tipple: Canberra and the World of Affordable Wine…

by The Vinsiders

Canberra Vs World Affordable Wine

About fifteen years ago, we visited some of the local Canberra wineries. Back then there was a higher than usual proportion of sympathy buys – you know the ones, where all the wines are not particularly good, but you feel that overriding sense of guilt that you should purchase something, so you pick the least offensive bottle at the cheapest possible price, smile, hand over the cash, and run out the door.

Well, how things have changed…

The Thursday Tipple – Return to Eden

by The Editor

Eden Road Winery copy
What images arise when we mention ‘Eden Road’? A naked frolic through the tulip beds of Floriade? The path to a serpent and an apple?

We bet a dog, um… humping your leg wasn’t one of them.

That’s the sight that greeted us when we first went to the Eden Road cellar door in Murrumbateman. Once we’d negotiated the amorous pooch, we entered the tasting room, only sub-$20 bottles were open for tasting, so the dog was showing more love than the cellar-door hand. What’s happened?

The Thursday Tipple – 2008 Tallagandra Hill ‘9 Barrels’

by C.A. Bonham

Situated in Gundaroo just north of Canberra is Tallagandra Hill. Brad and Annemaree Schafferius planted their vines in 1998, engaging both Greg Gallagher (Gallagher Estate) and Rob Howell (Jeir Creek) as their winemakers. They knock out around 1000 cases a year across nine different wines… but you’re a well-versed Canberran up to date in all things culinary so you would already know this.

THE THURSDAY TIPPLE – 2010 Nick O’Leary Shiraz

by C.A. Bonham

A well stocked fridge – Nick O’Leary’s 2010 Shiraz

2010 was not an easy one for Canberra Vineyards. We were given a warm spring that excited us all as a hot November led way for early flowering. However, Mother Nature can be a cruel mistress as December and January brought rain, cold and all the mould & disease problems that come with it. Some vineyards reported almost no issues, however many were not so fortunate.

The Thursday Tipple – 2010 Mount Majura Shiraz

by C.A. Bonham

Seeing as the highest temperature in our Nation’s Capital this week has been 13 degrees, we’re still in red country. Don’t worry, we also love the whites of the Canberra region – we’ll have some coming up over the next few Tipples.

But for now, let us say “We love you… Shiraz.”

The Artisan Loves Shiraz – July Wine Dinner

by The Editor

Image: theartisanrestaurant.com.au

We love the Artisan Restaurant in Narrabundah. Sam McGeechan and David Black are a couple of guys with sharp focus and sharper skills. Following the recent success of their chardonnay dinner, the likely lads are taking on shiraz. What a wonderfully warming winter idea!

The Thursday Tipple: 2010 Bourke Street Shiraz

by The Editor

2010 Bourke Street Shiraz

We are holding our own well in the Canberra region. Very well indeed, as evidenced by the high-profile exhibitors at this year’s Harvest Festival. While Shiraz in Australia is inevery way a big, generous and hearty varietal,  Canberra is giving Shiraz-lovers something different – a difference evident in the 2010 Bourke Street Shiraz.
