Bunda Street – A Wicked Problem

by The Editor

Bunda Street

Regular readers will be more than aware of our carefully thought through and eloquently explained opinion of the current state of Bunda Street.  In summary: not much.

With the focus of the city having been moved several years ago from the pedestrian-friendly Garema Place, an opportunity was lost to turn Bunda Street into an easily accessible service lane to supply a vibrant pedestrian mall.  Sadly, ACTPLA passed up on this opportunity, and we are stuck with a constantly gridlocked semi-carpark, dotted with overused zebra crossings while diners sit only metres away enjoying their lattes with the fumes of long-idling cars.

Brilliant.  So what next?

Coffee at Cream (of the crop?) in Civic

by Barrister Barista

If Canberra has a cafe strip, it’s in Civic between Garema Arcade and Bunda St.  On all days of the week, you can get poached eggs and a flat white al fresco at the family-and-friends-friendly venue of your choice.  The much google-reviewed Cream Cafe Bar is ostensibly the jewel in the crown, if only because it’s the easiest to find.  With an expansive corner frontage, serious decor and serious pricing, Cream screams ‘welcome to Canberra, we should catch up for coffee’.

¡Guzman y Gomez! ¿Bueno o Loco?

by The Editor

To indulge in lazy stereotypes (an indulgence we like to use sparingly) there are two types of people on this earth who wear moustaches:  hipsters and Mexicans.  Fortunately, the sprawling chain Guzman y Gomez -which appears to be sprouting outlets faster than Crust Pizza – is the perfect home for Fernando and his fixie.

Rant: The Nespresso Store

by The Editor

Well, God knows we’ve tried to avoid it, but a few days ago conceded it was perhaps time to visit the Nespresso Store, newly opened in The Canberra Centre.

This was, for us, an act of treachery. For months we have roamed the city searching for the best coffee to find ourselves occasionally disappointed but on most occasions pleased. To walk into the multinational’s top tier showroom was going to take a lot of inner strength – we could only imagine what our local barrister would say if he’d spied us hovering hesitantly at the entry of the store armed with dodgy camera phones. Think about it. This is the company that makes Blend 43.

Dress Circle – Caitlin

by The Editor

When we spotted Caitlin browsing the fashions in the Canberra Centre she exuded so much edgy cool that we just had to stop and talk to her. And we were pleased to discover that under that grungy exterior she was sweet as can be!

Dress Circle – Erica and Lexi

by The Editor

“OMG Twinsies!!!”

Erica and Lexie were waiting for a Boost juice when we spotted them. We weren’t sure whether they had texted each other prior to stepping out the door to orchestrate wearing their Black Milk leggings, or whether they were secretly annoyed at each other for wearing an almost identical outfit. We thought best not to ask, but they were happy with their similar stylings: that’s what BFFs do!

Watching the queue at the Apple Store opening

by The Editor

1000 and the doors open. The staff have counted down from 10 and the throng piles in.

0958. With two minutes to go the doors open and the staff run a lap of the queue offering ‘high fives’ to the faithful.

0956. Four minutes to go. It must be sweet relief for those at the front of the queue who have been here since 0530.

The Apple Falls Not Far From the Tree

Mac1 Canberra in a Previous Life

Updated: scroll below for a pre-opening photo of the new Apple Store

With only days to go until what Fairfax describes as the ‘most anticipated’ opening for the Apple Store in Canberra it is worth going beyond the hype of the impending arrival and instead pay tribute to the previous custodians of Canberra’s iGeek culture – Mac1.

Jamie’s Italian: Very Soon?

by The Editor

Updated:  Ay Carumba!!  As noted by commentor Simon – The Canberra Times now lists Guzman y Gomez as the new Restaurant in the Canberra Centre.  We love tacos, so are far from disappointed.  Perhaps we’ll have to wait a little longer for Jamie to arrive…

In the 6 July 2012 online edition of The Canberra Times (See?We can do it!) , Megan Doherty touches on some developments at The Canberra Centre other than those we’ve discussed on recent days. One sentence in particular stood out: a statement by Canberra Centre management regarding a new street front restaurant.

The Apple Store?

by The Editor

Update:  Well, it’s good to see The Canberran and its commentors forming an uncredited basis for Megan Doherty’s story that made the Technology section of the Sydney Morning Herald’s website this morning.

Where’s the love?

Well, between Nick, Nich0las and a couple of unnamed sources it appears we’ve managed to confirm a Zara outlet for the Canberra Centre.

So, with Apple advertising via their website for retail staff in Canberra, where will a new shiny glass store be located? We think Jono M hit the nail on the head.
