Well, it’s finally here. After 15 long years of Kingston Foreshore’s vision, we finally have the opening of Walt & Burley – a bar in such prime position down by the lake that you’ll wonder why it’s taken half a century to decide this is probably a good use of waterfront land.

Yep, that’s right. With around 40kms of shoreline around our manufactured lake, we haven’t managed to also construct a pub and dining precinct that takes advantage of this confection. Sure, there’s Boathouse By the Lake (lovely!) and the opportunity to picnic almost anywhere else (except for the GG’s pad), but we haven’t really hit pay-dirt when it comes to building a space where all Canberrans can sit and enjoy a glass of wine by the lake, rather than ride a bike around it.

That brings us to Walt & Burley. Positioned at the northern end of the rapidly-evolving dining strip on Eastlake parade, the doors are due to be thrown open at 11.00am on Thursday 19 June, and barely close after that. With every intention to host breakfast in the coming weeks – and open seven days a week – the aim of Walt & Burley is to be very much a part of the Kingston Foreshore (for those lucky enough to be able to afford it) while remaining an open and welcoming little pub on the water for who like to make Kingston a destination (the rest of us).

There are nine different beers on tap, as well as Kopparberg and Matilda Bay’s Dirty Granny cider to enjoy on a hot Summer’s day. The wine list looks intriguing, and we can see the seating outside the large bi-fold windows being the perfect place to knock back a bottle of Collector Lamplit Marsanne as the hours float on by (along with the occasional windsurfer).

On colder nights, snuggle up on the couches by the fireplace and hit a hefty bottle of red and perhaps some Duck Liver Paté. The menu is intriguing – being designed to suit whatever mood you may find yourself at that particular time of day. Still, be it breakfast, lunch or dinner, the dining room is ideal for checking out a few of the heavier courses with a setting that is more relaxed than formal.
