Polit Bar – Established 1927
by The Editor
In the last six or seven years we’ve seen four different bars occupy the space upstairs from the Westpac on Franklin Street in Manuka. The Julep Lounge, Tulip Lounge and The Vinyl Room have all had a presence in the cosy little spot looking over the street.
Now we have Polit Bar (established 1927). Is this a sign of cheeky things to come?
We don’t know as much as we’d like about Polit Bar, but a trawl through their Facebook page reveals the ladies in charge of launching this space have their tongues placed firmly in cheek. The company name at the bottom of the official website lists Kettle’s Boiling P/L with the wonderful motto Work hard. Laugh harder. Sleep like a diamond.
We love it!
For too long in this town po-faced bar operators have taken themselves far too seriously. Here, with the traditionally dry theme of politics, the ladies have taken a lighter touch and decided to play with the one part of the capital that Canberrans try so desperately to shirk. Why not? As a hotbed of political planning and scheming second only to Kingston, it makes sense to play with politics in Manuka.
Come the Election Day (whenever that may be!) Polit Bar plans to take it up a notch by having an official opening on the night featuring the ‘unreal former-PM’ Julia Spillard a.k.a. Gabby Millgate (see image above). For that evening, Polit Bar becomes the National Tally Room (Bar & Grill) which is hilarious in itself. Hopefully the owners can hold off long enough in the event the election is delayed until late November.
In the meantime, tonight is the night for Polit Bar to have a soft opening. They’ll be open from 4.00pm, so wander in after work and have a look at the brand new fit-out. The sneak peak placed on Facebook a few days ago demonstrated a certain degree of opulence that takes us back to the original Julep Lounge. Hopefully Manuka delivers another well-thought through drinking venue – the renaissance is almost complete
