We’ve been watching Zoe Brown for a while now, and are excited that she will be presenting a new collection at FashFest.  If you don’t know Zoe, who combines a variety of materials with a playful style, her personal design philosophy is as follows:

“Creating a wonderland where you don’t know the rules, the guides or the danger, but you wanna play anyway!”
This reflects Zoe’s persona of creating your own reality though fashion. Combining an innate quirkiness of doll like femininity and mixed with a bit of youth culture rebellion and a street-wear edge creates her recipe for design. www.zoe-brown.com

We sat Zoe down with a list of 20 questions in order to discover even more about her history and influences.  By the time you’ve read through her responses you’ll know a lot more about one of Canberra’s truly delightful designers.

  1. My name is Zoe

  2. My label is called wnd.lnd (pronounced Wonderland)

  3. I graduated in 2011 from Canberra Institute of Technology

  4. The theme of my collection is: Looking at aspects of death, and tragedy but of course in a fun filled way! Watch the Virgin Suicides for some references!

  5. The next challenge I face is: Starting it! There are so many challenges in fashion, it is more like organising people/things/colours/fabrics/makeup/models/hair etc.

  6. As a child, my favourite object was: Barbie.  She was hella stylish and I got to dress her how I wanted, and she had a super cute boyfriend Ken! Plus, I had this amazing pink convertible she used to cruise in.

  7. The craziest item I’ve ever designed was: My Ornamental Dress. I resin-dipped vintage doilies and painted them black to create plate like objects to put hand sewn cupcakes/teapots/and pastries on!

  8. My biggest personal fashion regret is: Wearing underwear as pants. I have a booty, and I did it before Lady Gaga did it and made it cool!

  9. I’m inspired by: Everything!  If someone gives me something I will turn it into fashion!

  10. A model I would like to work with is: Cara Delevinge, Charlotte Free & Bambi Norwood Blythe. They are super cute and non traditional models who have their own style and it always shows through no mater what designer they are modelling for.

  • A designer I would like to collaborate with is: Ooh… so hard! Jeremy Scott was my idol until he copied prints from Skateboards. Now I would say someone like Meadham Kirchhoff, Di$count or Emma Mulholland. They are a little bit crazy but still super cool and I like them. 😉 They also create ground-breaking fashion that isn’t for everyone and don’t follow trends but rather create them.

  • The most challenging material I work with is: Everything! I always end up challenging myself in some way, pink pleather, doilies, table cloth material, bits and pieces from Bunnings work a treat! Fabric stores just don’t cut it sometimes…

  • My favourite part of Canberra is: Hanging out at home. It’s like a living dollhouse filled with antiques and pink furniture! I love to collect antiques and I should probably belong on the show Hoarders and buried alive.

  • If I weren’t doing this I would be: Pursuing something in fashion, maybe opening my own boutique. I don’t know what else to do and I love clothes and cute stuff and talking to people.

  • One thing I’ll never understand is: Why Rihanna is with Chris Brown. I understand girls like a badboy but shes not gonna be the one to break him.Line BreakZoe Brown

  • If my designs were a holiday destination they would be: Candyland.  They are sweet, but might give you some cavities too!
    Line Break
  • A fashion trend that should never return is: Never say ‘never’… I think anything could be fashionable to someone…
    Line Break
  • Someone who is always well dressed is: Wearing what they want and pulling it off – as Ted Moseby would say! I don’t care if you wear a $600 dress and just wear it, its how you mix that $600 dress with vintage unique finds is what makes you stylish and well dressed.

  • The last thing I read was: I actually don’t have time to read, but the last thing I read in general was my bank statement  It wasn’t fun!

  • Love my work? You can buy my designs at: I will hopefully be selling my stuff soon. Stay tuned! 😉
