To celebrate the Centenary of Canberra and the launch of the Gallery of Australian Design’s YOUNG.HOT.CANBERRA exhibition, The Canberran is featuring local designers who’s work will be displayed at the GAD from Saturday 12 January until Saturday 23 February 2013
0.7 Tom Skeehan
Tom Skeehan is a Canberra based industrial designer, specialising in commercial furniture and objects for the home. His industrial design company SKEEHAN has been running for five years and SKEEHAN furniture has been designed and produced for venues all over Canberra, including Two Before Ten Coffee Roasters and Café, La de da bar, Lonsdale Street Roasters and the Zierholz Brewery.
His most recognised work is his selection of stools, made from aluminium and/or timber, some of which are collapsible. Tom Skeehan has also designed bikes, lighting fixtures and limited edition objects for the home, including chopsticks and pepper grinders. In 2012 he completed his degree in Industrial Design at the University of Canberra. The same year he was included in Emerging Contemporaries at Craft ACT, exhibited in Workshopped 12 and his ARUkU and KAShI stools where shortlisted for the Launch Pad Awards.
In his own words:
My name is Tom Skeehan, I am an industrial designer. I am interested in how the lived experience of my products unfold; interaction, discovery, and the development of personal connections all inform the way in which I design.
YOUNG.HOT.CANBERRA. is an exhibition showcasing Canberra’s brightest young design stars featuring the work of Dan Armstrong & Nick Robinson, Luke Chiswell, Chris Doyle, Alison Jackson, Megan Jackson, Paul Krix, Cinnamon Lee, Dan Lorrimer & Mitchell Brooks, Tom Skeehan and Supermanoeuvre.
Exhibition runs until 23 February 2013 with Saturday morning artist talks each week at 11am.
