Moet & Chandon Ice Imperial

by The Editor

Ice.  It’s a relatively simple product which takes complicated forms.  Ice on your windscreen?  Annoying.  Ice on the road?  Dangerous.  Ice smoked through a pipe?  Downright stupid.

Still, for those who have been to a barbeque anywhere north of the Tweed, ice is an automatic addition to a glass of white wine on a hot and humid day.  With Moet and Chandon recognising and embracing the increasingly affluent South East Asian population, it was always going to be necessary to develop a product more amenable to the local climate.

And so, just prior to summer in the Southern Hemisphere Moet & Chandon launched through exclusive global parties their Ice Imperial champagne.  The flavour is intentionally dense with the addition of ice cubes necessary to restore the correct balance for the palate.

Sounds great, doesn’t it?  So, where can you get yourself a bottle?

Well, certainly not at your local bottleshop.  If you’re in Sydney, you can pop in to the Pool Bar at Ivy or (rather fittingly) Bondi Icebergs where a bottle will set you back around $120.  Most of the Australian stockists are in Queensland, perhaps more fittingly given the warmer climes, the feature venue is Glass at Marina Mirage ($24 per glass). But what about the local scene?

In Canberra no venue has yet been bestowed with the coveted white bottles.  Rumour has it some one operator was literally screaming to get their hands on stock in time for the Christmas rush, but to no avail.  Perhaps we’re just not hot enough (at least Melbourne isn’t either).  It will be interesting to see if any restaurant gets the nod this summer.  In the meantime, if you can’t wait or make it to Sydney, you can make pretend by purchasing Ice Imperial buckets or pairs of Ice Imperial glasses for around $100 each on eBay.  If you’re lucky enough to still be on holiday, and looking for some Ice Imperial for a ‘sundowner’, here’s a list of the designated Australian hotspots:
