Accolades for Aubergine
by The Editor
Well, it looks as though the local talent has scooped the pool in a way no other regional restaurant in NSW/ACT has ever done before.
Last Monday night (3 September) at the announcement of the Sydney Morning Herald’s Good Food Guide Awards, Andrea and Ben Willis from Aubergine were awarded a rare double.
The restaurant, long one of the best in Canberra under firstly James Mussillon and now the steerage of the Willis’, was awarded two Hats (the only venue in Canberra to achieve this standard), was named Best Regional Restaurant in NSW/ACT and, to top it off, also awarded Best Regional Wine List.
It’s an incredible achievement, and one that places Aubergine up with the best of Sydney – knocking on the door of Three Hat territory where Momofuku Seiobo, Rockpool, Quay and other epicurean elites reign.
While the achievements of One Hat winners Italian & Sons, Courgette, Lanterne Rooms and Ottoman Cuisine are deserved in their own right, it is clear Aubergine has reached a new height for local dining. This is important, as it allows Canberra to move a step closer to shaking off the inferiority complex it is sometimes happy to wear.
Well done, Andrea and Ben. You’ve done us proud.
